French
Grade-boundary Aiming Higher strategies for GCSE French at Rockwood.
Moving from a Grade 3 to a solid Grade 4
Focus on core vocabulary, simple grammar structures, predictable tasks and basic communication.
Strengthen high-frequency vocabulary
Students should focus on everyday vocabulary that appears repeatedly across Edexcel Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking:
- Opinions: j'aime, je n'aime pas, je préfère
- Time markers: hier, demain, souvent, normalement
- Common verbs: aller, faire, avoir, être
- Topics: family, school, hobbies, food, technology, holidays
- Key question words: où, quand, pourquoi, comment, avec qui
Strong vocab recall is the fastest way to reach Grade 4.
Secure basic grammar foundations
Students should confidently use:
- Present tense of common verbs
- Negatives (ne… pas)
- Simple adjectives with agreement (petit / petite etc.)
- Basic connectives: et, mais, parce que
These reduce errors and create clear, accurate sentences across all skills.
Prepare reliable answers to predictable speaking questions
Edexcel's speaking tasks often cover:
- Identity and culture
- Local area and holidays
- School
- Future plans
Students should prepare short 2–3 sentence answers including an opinion, reason and time frame.
Listening and Reading: focus on key words
At Grade 3–4, students should listen/scan for:
- names
- numbers
- times
- places
- simple opinions
- familiar verbs
Partial understanding still gains marks.
Build confidence in writing short responses
For the 40-word task:
- Answer every bullet point
- Use opinions + reasons
- Include a past or future tense if possible
- Aim for 4–6 short, correct sentences
Use all four skills in revision
A balanced approach across Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing helps students progress faster.
Moving from a Grade 4 to a solid Grade 5
Focus on extended answers, confidence with past/future tenses and richer vocabulary.
Develop confidence with past and future tenses
Students should use:
- Perfect tense (j'ai visité, j'ai regardé)
- Near future (je vais visiter)
- Optional: Future simple (je visiterai)
Even 1–2 accurate tense changes can lift grades.
Grow topic-specific vocabulary
For each theme, students should learn vocabulary such as:
- School life and pressures
- Technology and social media
- Environment and global issues
- Healthy lifestyle
- Work and future ambitions
This broadens understanding in Listening/Reading and boosts Writing/Speaking.
Improve writing structure (90-word tasks)
A strong Grade 5 response uses:
- Paragraph 1: opinions + reasons
- Paragraph 2: past tense
- Paragraph 3: future/conditional
- Paragraph 4: extra detail or contrasting idea
Clear structure means clear marks.
Better inference in Listening and Reading
Students should practise:
- spotting synonyms (e.g. content = heureux)
- avoiding distractors
- scanning questions for focus words
- using logic and context to infer meaning
Speaking: develop more confident responses
Encourage:
- natural linking words: mais, aussi, pourtant
- short expansions: “par exemple”
- adding tenses naturally
- not memorising essays, but rehearsing flexible, adaptable language
Strengthen grammar accuracy
At this stage, students should reduce:
- adjective agreement errors
- incorrect verb endings
- missing negatives
- il/ils confusion
Accuracy moves writing and speaking into Grade 5 territory.
Aiming for the Highest Grades (6–9)
Focus on varied complex structures, spontaneous speaking, idiomatic French and high-tier comprehension.
Use a wide range of tenses and structures
High-grade performance includes:
- Perfect
- Imperfect
- Near future
- Future simple
- Conditional (je voudrais, je pourrais)
- Subjunctive phrases where natural (bien que ce soit)
- Complex sentences with si…, quand…, parce que…, puisque…
Variety earns top-band marks.
Add idiomatic expressions
Short natural French phrases elevate responses:
- Ça me plaît (I like it)
- J'en ai marre de… (fed up with)
- Il faisait un temps de rêve (the weather was amazing)
- Je suis ravi(e) de… (I'm delighted about)
- Je dirais que… (I would say that)
Idiomatic language is a hallmark of Grades 7–9.
Strengthen high-tier Listening and Reading skills
Top-end students can:
- deduce meaning from context
- deal with unfamiliar vocabulary
- understand gist and specific detail
- spot nuance (sarcasm, tone, inference)
- interpret longer, more abstract texts
These skills push comprehension into the higher bands.
Write analytically with depth (150-word tasks)
High-grade writing includes:
- well-linked paragraphs
- contrasting viewpoints
- deeper explanations using connectives
- references to consequences or wider issues
- at least three tenses
- idiomatic language integrated naturally
Grades 7–9 require sophistication, not just accuracy.
Speak spontaneously and confidently
For top grades, students should:
- vary vocabulary and structures
- extend answers naturally
- respond flexibly to unpredictable questions
- self-correct gracefully
- incorporate idiomatic expressions
- maintain good pronunciation and intonation
Spontaneity is heavily rewarded in Edexcel's speaking assessment.
Demonstrate accurate grammar control
High-tier students ensure:
- consistent verb conjugation
- correct agreements
- secure pronoun use (le, lui, leur)
- varied negatives (ne… jamais, ne… plus, ne… personne)
- accurate tense handling throughout
Accuracy plus variety gives top band in Writing and Speaking.
Show cultural awareness
Brief references to francophone culture strengthen authenticity, such as:
- French school differences
- Francophone countries
- Festivals (la Fête de la Musique, le 14 juillet)
- Traditional foods
- French customs and values
This can lift higher-tier responses.
